AIFF Embraces New Governance Act in Historic Move

In the heart of Kolkata, where football fervour runs deep, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) took a significant step forward on Saturday. The General Body, in a unanimous decision, adopted the National Sports Governance Act 2025 during a Special General Body Meeting, marking a new era for governance in Indian football.

The meeting, attended by 19 Executive Committee Members and 32 representatives from various member state associations, was more than a mere formality. It was a decisive move to instil greater transparency and accountability within the sport’s governing framework.

While the adoption of the Act was the headline grabber, discussions also veered towards constitutional reforms for member associations. The AIFF has empowered its Executive Committee to engage in negotiations regarding media rights agreements (MRA), a crucial element in the commercial landscape of modern sport.

Reform for Transparency

The National Sports Governance Act, a brainchild of sports reformists, aims to overhaul the governance structures of sports bodies across India. For football, this promises not just a facelift but a foundational shift. By emphasising principles such as transparency and accountability, the Act seeks to align Indian football governance with international best practices.

“This is a pivotal moment for Indian football,” said AIFF President. “We are committed to ensuring that our governance structures are robust and transparent, which will ultimately benefit the sport at all levels.”

Commercial Decisions Deferred

However, not all decisions were made on the day. The AIFF deferred its decision on selecting a new commercial partner for the Indian Super League, a move that could significantly impact the league's financial landscape. The delay underscores the complexity and importance of securing a deal that aligns with the AIFF's vision for the sport’s future.

As Indian football navigates these transformative waters, stakeholders and fans alike will be watching keenly, hopeful that these reforms will translate into tangible progress on and off the pitch.
