AIFF Endorses National Sports Governance Act in Landmark Move
The All India Football Federation (AIFF), in a move that underscores its commitment to reform, has unanimously approved the adoption of the National Sports Governance Act 2025. This decision, taken during a pivotal meeting of the AIFF General Body, is expected to bring about a sea change in the administration of sports across India.
For the AIFF, the adoption of this Act is more than just a procedural formality. It signifies a determined effort to instil greater transparency and accountability within its operations and those of its Member Associations. The General Body has decided to circulate the draft Constitution among the Member Associations, granting them a 15-day period to provide feedback and final suggestions.
The National Sports Governance Act, which has been a subject of much debate and anticipation, aims to balance the autonomy of sports federations with the need for accountability. As AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey remarked, "The Act is a milestone in our journey towards a more transparent and efficient sporting ecosystem."
This development arrives on the heels of another significant move by the state of Bengal, which has opted to bring its sports governance under the ambit of this new legislation. Such regional endorsements further solidify the Act's standing as a cornerstone of future sports governance in the country.
However, the AIFF's recent decision is not without its challenges. The organisation is currently revisiting the commercial agreements related to the Indian Super League, indicating that financial deliberations are far from over. The Executive Committee has been tasked with reassessing a substantial Rs 2129 crore bid from Genius Sports, ensuring that commercial interests align with the newly adopted governance standards.
