Andhra Loyola College Advances Tech Training for Visually Impaired
In the bustling city of Vijayawada, a quiet yet profound transformation is underway at Andhra Loyola College. The institution has taken a noteworthy step by initiating a training programme in assistive technology for its visually impaired students, aiming to bridge the digital divide.
This initiative, launched on 6th December, comes through a collaboration with Enable India. Two visually impaired trainers, Mr Siva Sankar and Mr Lakshmi Narayana, have taken the helm, sharing their expertise and experiences to guide students through the intricacies of digital skills training.
Empowering Through Technology
The programme is not merely a series of lessons but a gateway to opportunity. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with Enable India, marking the inauguration of a Digital Literacy Lab at the college's Fr Gordon Library. This lab is equipped with essential tools, including smart vision glasses and laptops, donated by NIIF Infrastructure Finance, to enhance the learning experience.
For the visually impaired, technology is not just an aid; it is a means of empowerment. These tools enable students to access a plethora of opportunities that were previously out of reach. With the training, they can now aspire to 176 different types of jobs in the corporate sector, roles that demand digital literacy and competence.
Breaking Barriers
The challenges faced by visually impaired individuals in accessing technology are manifold. Despite the advancements in assistive technologies, the lack of awareness and training facilities has often been a barrier. This initiative by Andhra Loyola College seeks to dismantle such barriers, providing students with the skills necessary to thrive in a digital world.
Fr Sahaya Raj, the college's correspondent, emphasised the significance of this programme, stating, "This training is a step towards inclusivity, ensuring that our visually impaired students are not left behind in the digital age." His words capture the essence of the programme's mission—to equip students with the skills and confidence needed to navigate and succeed in a world increasingly dominated by technology.
As the students embark on this new journey, the hope is that they not only gain technical skills but also the self-assurance to pursue their ambitions, breaking free from the constraints that once held them back.
