Bronze Age Shipwreck Emerges from the Depths off Turkish Coast

Not far from the sun-kissed beaches of Antalya, a team of intrepid maritime archaeologists has unearthed a relic from a bygone era, submerged beneath the azure waters of the Mediterranean. The discovery, a 3,600-year-old shipwreck, is being hailed as potentially the oldest ever found. This ancient vessel lies some 50 metres off the coast, near the picturesque village of Adrasan.

Dr Hakan Öniz, leading the exploration for Akdeniz University’s Underwater Research Centre, described the ship as a merchant vessel likely on its final voyage from Cyprus. Laden with Eastern sigillata pottery, the ship’s cargo provides a rare glimpse into the trade networks that flourished during the Bronze Age. The pottery, distinguished by its red slip and intricate designs, was a coveted commodity, illustrating the sophistication of early industrial production.

Found at depths ranging from 33 to 46 metres, the shipwreck adds a significant chapter to the understanding of ancient maritime commerce. As Dr Öniz pointed out, “This ship was probably carrying one of the world’s first and earliest industrial products.” Such finds are rare, and the meticulous excavation process has been a labour of love for the team, who battled challenging conditions to recover artefacts without disturbing the site’s integrity.

The implications of this discovery extend beyond archaeological circles. It underscores the enduring legacy of human ingenuity and adaptability, as ancient mariners navigated perilous seas with rudimentary technology. The shipwreck's preservation and study promise to enrich our understanding of early civilisations and their interactions over vast distances.

As the Underwater Research Centre continues its work, the shipwreck stands as a testament to the enduring fascination with our shared past and the stories that lie beneath the waves, waiting to be told.
