CISCE Revolutionises Exams by Integrating Physical Education
The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has taken an unprecedented step by integrating physical education into the formal assessment framework of its board exams. This strategic move marks a shift from the traditional focus solely on academic subjects, acknowledging the crucial role of sports and health in a student’s overall development.
Historically, physical education has often been relegated to the periphery of the school curriculum, treated more as a leisure activity than a core component of education. However, the CISCE’s decision to include it in board assessments for classes 11 and 12 reflects a broader educational philosophy that values the mind-body connection.
Promoting Holistic Development
Dr. Gerry Arathoon, Chief Executive and Secretary of CISCE, elucidated the council’s vision: “Education is not just about intellectual growth, but also about cultivating a healthy body and a balanced lifestyle. By embedding physical education into our assessments, we aim to ensure that students graduate with skills that extend beyond textbooks.”
This development comes at a time when concerns about student well-being have been heightened by the pressures of academic achievement and increasing screen time. By emphasising health and well-being, the CISCE hopes to instil lifelong habits that support physical fitness and mental health.
The Road Ahead
The new syllabus for Health and Physical Education will include both practical and theoretical components. Students will be assessed on their knowledge of health topics, as well as their participation in physical activities. This dual approach is designed to foster a deeper understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Critics, however, have voiced concerns about the logistics of implementing this change across diverse educational settings. Schools will need to invest in adequate infrastructure and qualified staff to effectively deliver these programmes.
Despite these challenges, the CISCE’s initiative is a progressive step towards a more comprehensive education system. By recognising the importance of physical health alongside academic prowess, the council is paving the way for a future where students are equipped not just with knowledge, but with the tools to lead balanced and fulfilling lives.
