CJI Surya Kant Urges Broader Legal Education at NLSIU Convocation
As the autumn leaves rustled outside the Jnana Jyoti Auditorium in Bengaluru, the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) held its 34th annual convocation. Presiding over the ceremony was Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, who took the opportunity to deliver a keynote address that extended beyond the confines of traditional legal education.
'The legal profession today demands more than a mere understanding of criminal and constitutional law,' CJI Surya Kant remarked to the graduates, a sentiment met with nods of agreement from the audience. 'In a rapidly evolving world, lawyers must be equipped with a broader spectrum of knowledge to address the multifaceted challenges that lie ahead.'
The Chief Justice's words carried particular weight against the backdrop of recent student opposition at NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, where his presence had been contested. However, in Bengaluru, the reception was warm, reflecting perhaps a shared recognition of the need for adaptation in legal education.
Beyond Traditional Boundaries
During his address, Justice Kant emphasised that future legal practitioners must consider the implications of technology, international law, environmental issues, and human rights in their practice. 'Legal education cannot operate in a silo,' he stated, urging students to embrace interdisciplinary learning and to remain agile in their professional development.
This perspective aligns with a growing awareness within legal circles that change is not only inevitable but necessary. As the legal landscape becomes more complex, the ability to think critically and holistically is increasingly valued.
The Road Ahead
NLSIU's decision to hold the convocation, after initial hesitations, perhaps reflects an understanding of the importance of such discourse. The ceremony, attended by the eminent theatre personality Arundhati Nag as chief guest, was not merely a celebration of academic achievement but a call to action for the new generation of lawyers.
As graduates tossed their caps into the air, the message was clear: the future of the legal profession lies in its ability to evolve and respond to the needs of society. With legal education expanding its horizons, the next chapter promises to be as challenging as it is inspiring.
