Farooq Abdullah Extends Support to Ailing Activist Sonam Wangchuk

In a climate of mounting concern over activist Sonam Wangchuk's health, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah took a personal step by meeting Gitanjali J Angmo, Wangchuk’s wife, outside Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi. Wangchuk, an influential figure in the environmental activism of Ladakh, has been on a hunger strike since June 28, advocating for greater autonomy for Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

Abdullah’s visit, while ostensibly a gesture of goodwill, was laden with political significance. The backdrop of this meeting is marked by the Indian government's allegations against Wangchuk, which include accusations of foreign influence and links to Pakistan — charges that have been staunchly denied by his supporters. Angmo, visibly concerned, remains sceptical of the medical tests conducted on her husband, claiming a lack of transparency in the reports.

Doctors have raised alarms about Wangchuk's deteriorating condition, noting a troubling weight loss of over nine kilograms. His physician, Dr Satish Lamba, has reported that the activist’s weight has plummeted to 56.9 kg, sparking fears about the potential long-term impact on his health.

Amidst these challenges, Abdullah expressed his solidarity with Wangchuk’s cause. "We wish he gets better, remains healthy, and his protest finds success," Abdullah remarked, reflecting a broader political alignment with Wangchuk’s demands for constitutional safeguards for Ladakh.

Wangchuk's protest has drawn widespread attention, with several political figures, including Mehbooba Mufti, voicing their support. This highlights a growing consensus among regional leaders on the need for more inclusive governance structures in Ladakh. As Wangchuk's health continues to be a matter of public concern, his struggle underscores the complex political dynamics at play in the region.
