Global South Emerges in FinTech: A New Era of Innovation
The Global FinTech Hub Report 2026, unveiled at the Financial Street Forum, paints a vivid picture of a world where the Global South is no longer a mere spectator in the financial technology arena. Instead, regions traditionally perceived as trailing are now leading the charge in innovation, leveraging their unique challenges into opportunities.
According to the report, co-authored by FT Partners and BCG, cities in Africa, Latin America, and parts of Asia are emerging as new powerhouses in the FinTech sector. This shift is attributed to a combination of factors: a youthful, digitally-native population, increasing mobile and internet penetration, and a pressing need for innovative financial solutions in underbanked areas.
Ben Shengli, president of the Beijing Frontier Institute, emphasised that these regions are not merely adopting existing technologies but are creating bespoke solutions tailored to local needs. "What we see is a bottom-up innovation," Shengli noted, "where local entrepreneurs are crafting digital tools that address specific regional challenges."
The Global South's rise is not without reason. The aftermath of the 2023/2024 financial reset left many traditional markets grappling with regulatory burdens and compliance issues, which have inadvertently paved the way for more agile and adaptable players in emerging markets. With FinTech revenues growing by 22% in 2025, the sector's dynamism is palpable.
Yet, the expansion presents its own hurdles. As these new hubs gain prominence, they face increased scrutiny and the need to navigate complex regulatory environments. The challenge will be to balance innovation with the rigours of compliance, a task that will test the agility of these burgeoning markets.
In this evolving landscape, technology is not just reshaping city competitiveness but redefining what it means to be a global financial hub. As the world watches the Global South's ascent, it becomes clear that the future of FinTech will be as diverse as the regions driving its growth.
