Government Boosts Sports Infrastructure Funding in J&K
In a determined stride towards bolstering its sports infrastructure, the government has earmarked significant funds across Jammu and Kashmir. The allocation of Rs 17.81 crore under the UT Capex budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 marks a sharp rise, yet the utilisation has been uneven, with only Rs 11.16 crore spent thus far.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha recently inaugurated a multipurpose indoor sports hall, a project worth Rs 5 crore, alongside laying foundation stones for artificial turf for rugby and a synthetic hockey turf, pegged at Rs 5 crore and Rs 5.5 crore respectively. These projects are expected to be completed by the next financial year.
Despite the ambitious funding, the distribution of resources remains inconsistent, highlighting challenges in the execution of such large-scale projects. The government aims to address these disparities by ensuring that rural areas, often overlooked, receive adequate support. Minister for Rural Development, Abdul Haq, emphasised the need for sports infrastructure in these areas to tap into the latent potential of rural youth.
The infusion of over Rs 420.57 crore by the youth services department, funded by JKIDFC, is part of a larger strategy to upgrade sports facilities across the union territory. This initiative aligns with the central government's revamped Khelo India Scheme, which has allocated Rs 565 crore for future projects over a five-year plan.
As the projects progress, they promise not just upgraded facilities but also a platform for emerging athletes to hone their skills and compete at higher levels. The government’s commitment to developing sports infrastructure is a step towards not only nurturing talent but also fostering community engagement through sports.
