Gujarat Political Parties Entangled in Multi-Crore Donation Scandal
In a twist that surprises few familiar with India's often opaque political funding, Gujarat police have filed cases against three political parties implicated in a donation scam amounting to a staggering Rs 1,870 crore. These Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs) allegedly orchestrated a scheme that resulted in a Rs 560-crore loss to the public exchequer.
The investigation, spearheaded by the Income Tax department, has revealed a web of purported bogus donations. These donations were linked to fake 80GGC receipts, designed to provide tax benefits to the donors, along with elaborate cash-back and commission arrangements. In a peculiar twist, despite receiving an astounding Rs 4,300 crore in donations from 2019 to 2024, these parties fielded a mere 43 candidates in various elections, collectively securing just 54,069 votes.
Political Funding Under Scrutiny
This scandal has reignited the debate over the regulation of political funding in India. Currently, the absence of stringent oversight mechanisms allows for the proliferation of such financial malpractices. Transparency advocates argue that such cases highlight the urgent need for reform in political funding laws, particularly concerning the operations of RUPPs.
Reports indicate that the Gujarat I-T department had flagged Rs 725 crore in alleged bogus donations linked to just two RUPPs. These revelations have spurred calls for a comprehensive audit of political donations across the country, especially given the significant sums involved and the potential for misuse.
Implications for Future Elections
The timing of this scandal, with national elections on the horizon, is particularly consequential. While mainstream political parties, including the Congress, have been scrutinised for their income from unknown sources, this case involving lesser-known entities underscores the pervasiveness of funding irregularities. It serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing electoral integrity in the world's largest democracy.
The Gujarat police's actions mark a significant step in addressing these challenges, but the path to reform remains fraught with political and bureaucratic hurdles. As the investigation unfolds, all eyes will be on whether this case prompts meaningful change or becomes another footnote in the annals of political controversy.
