Haryana Guest Teachers Demand Regularisation in Spirited Protest

Under the unrelenting Haryana sun, guest teachers from across the state gathered outside Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda's residence in Gurugram, their voices united in a single demand: regularisation. For over 77 days, these educators have been embroiled in a relentless struggle, pressing for the implementation of government promises that seem perpetually deferred.

The teachers are calling for the enforcement of provisions that would offer them parity with their fully employed counterparts. Central to their demands is the proposal that guarantees them employment until the age of 58, along with the prospect of biannual salary increments. These provisions had been enshrined in a government bill, yet their realisation remains elusive.

The Long Road to Recognition

The protest in Gurugram is but one chapter in a statewide campaign for justice. Earlier demonstrations in places like Yamunanagar and Bhubaneswar echo the same frustrations. Despite a government notification asserting the regularisation of their services, many teachers remain in precarious employment, akin to a sort of professional purgatory.

Guest teachers argue that their roles are no different from those of regular teachers, yet they are denied the stability and benefits that come with formal recognition. "We teach the same syllabus, manage similar classrooms, yet our futures are uncertain," lamented one teacher at the protest.

The Government's Stance

The Haryana government has maintained that it is committed to addressing the teachers' demands. However, logistical and administrative hurdles have been cited as reasons for the delay. Critics, however, argue that the delay reflects a deeper ambivalence towards the teaching profession itself, which often finds itself at the mercy of budgetary constraints and political will.

As the protest continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the broader challenges facing the education sector in India. The call for regularisation is not merely about employment terms; it is about recognising the essential role that educators play in shaping the future.
