India's Economic Growth Shines Amidst Concerns Over Business Climate

India's economic trajectory continues to ascend with a vigour that is capturing global attention. The World Economic Forum's latest survey reveals that India holds the strongest growth outlook amongst major economies, yet this optimism is tempered by apprehensions about its business environment.

Despite a forecasted GDP growth of 6.7% for the fiscal year 2026-27, a significant portion of multinational companies remain wary of investing in the subcontinent. The survey highlights that while 74% of chief economists anticipate strong or very strong growth in India over the next year, the enthusiasm does not extend to the business climate, which has seen a relative weakening.

Growth Amidst Caution

The dichotomy between growth potential and business sentiment is striking. The United States, leading the rankings, is perceived as a more favourable destination for business, with 77% of respondents rating it highly. India's robust growth prospects, however, seem to be overshadowed by concerns over regulatory complexities, infrastructure challenges, and bureaucratic hurdles.

Experts suggest that India's potential could be fully realised through reforms that streamline business operations and enhance transparency. The Modi government's efforts to bolster the 'Make in India' initiative are recognised, yet the pace of implementation remains a point of contention.

Unsteady Global Context

Globally, the economic landscape is uneven. South-East Asia and Central Asia join India in the list of regions with promising growth, while China's outlook has notably dimmed, with only one in three economists expecting strong growth. This sets a unique stage for India, where its trajectory could serve as a beacon for emerging markets.

Nevertheless, the survey underscores a critical gap between economic potential and business confidence. Bridging this divide requires a concerted effort to address the structural impediments that currently hinder India's business environment. Analysts remain hopeful yet cautious, emphasising that strategic policy adjustments could transform India's growth narrative from potential to reality.
