India's Sporting Age Fraud: A Deep-Rooted Challenge

In the bustling world of Indian sports, where talent and opportunity often collide, the spectre of age fraud looms large. It's a practice as old as the hills, yet it persists with a stubborn tenacity that would impress even the most seasoned athlete. The allure of gaining a competitive edge by shaving a few years off one's age is too tempting for some, leading to systemic manipulation across various sporting disciplines.

This issue is particularly rife in sports where age-group competitions offer substantial rewards. Here, the scrutiny is minimal, and the incentives are high, creating a fertile ground for deceit. Recently, hundreds of young wrestlers were disqualified from under-17 championships for falsifying their ages. Such incidents highlight a grim reality that has plagued Indian sports for decades.

The Government's Response

In response to this endemic problem, the Indian Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has been spurred into action. They are drafting a comprehensive code against age fraud, marking the first significant policy response in over a decade. This National Code Against Age Fraud in Sports (NCAAFS) aims to make the act of deception both harder and more costly.

As Mr Mehrotra, a senior official, wisely notes, "One cannot eliminate the menace 100 percent overnight." His pragmatic approach underscores the enormity of the task at hand. The code is a positive step forward, yet it represents merely the beginning of what must be a sustained effort to root out age fraud.

Changing the Culture

Experts contend that the problem is deeply entrenched in the sporting culture, particularly at the sub-junior and junior levels. Here, the rewards for success can be life-changing, and the pressure to perform is immense. In the absence of a robust birth registration system and a centralised athlete database, age fraud has flourished.

Changing this culture will require more than just policy. It demands a shift in mindset among athletes, coaches, and parents. It necessitates rigorous monitoring and the imposition of stiffer sanctions against offenders. Only then can Indian sports hope to move past this shadow of deceit and towards a future where talent is the true measure of success.
