Kuki-Zo Women Demand President's Rule Amid Manipur Turmoil
In the heart of India's northeastern state, a crisis brews under the watchful eyes of the nation. The Kuki-Zo Women's Forum, representing a community beset by tragedy, has made a fervent appeal to the central government, urging the imposition of President's Rule in Manipur.
The forum's plea, articulated at a demonstration held at Jantar Mantar, comes in the wake of mounting civilian casualties — 27 lives lost since March, including eight women. The deaths, they argue, underscore a grim reality: the situation in Manipur transcends a mere security issue; it is a deeply entrenched political quagmire.
A professor from Delhi, speaking on behalf of the group, emphasised the urgency of their request. "We realise that this is a long procedure and will take time but in the meantime, it is paramount that President’s Rule is implemented so that the bloodshed can stop," she remarked.
The appeal also calls for President Droupadi Murmu to visit the region, meet with the affected Kuki-Zo women, and provide necessary assurances. The forum insists that such a move would not only offer solace but also signify a commitment to addressing the root causes of the unrest.
While the deaths themselves present a harrowing narrative, the forum has also highlighted systemic issues in governance, security, and healthcare. They have filed a complaint under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, seeking immediate intervention.
The Political Undercurrents
At its core, the Kuki-Zo Women's Forum views the unrest as inherently political. The call for President's Rule is a measure of their desperation, reflecting a loss of faith in the state's current governance mechanisms. This, they assert, is crucial for the restoration of peace and normalcy in Manipur.
Observers note that the region's volatility stems from longstanding ethnic tensions and political grievances. The Kuki-Zo community feels marginalised, and their voices unheard, which has only exacerbated the conflict.
As the central government deliberates on the forum's demands, the situation in Manipur remains tense. The Kuki-Zo Women's Forum's call to action is a poignant reminder that, in their view, the state's crisis is not just about maintaining law and order, but about restoring justice and equity.
