Loreto College Celebrates Mental Health with Mindfulness and Dance

On a bustling October morning, Loreto College in Kolkata transformed into a hub of mental health advocacy, marking World Mental Health Day with a programme that was as enlightening as it was engaging. The historic institution, renowned for its dedication to women's education since 1912, opened its doors to a dialogue on psychological well-being, led by the Department of Psychology.

Dr. Saamdu Chetri, an expert in mindfulness, captivated students with sessions that delved into the nuances of self-awareness and stress management. His approach, a blend of scientific research and philosophical insights, resonated with many. Dr. Chetri emphasised the profound effects mindfulness can have on brain function and emotional regulation, asserting that these practices could be a cornerstone for healthier living.

Dance Movement Therapy: A New Frontier

The introduction of Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) added a dynamic layer to the day's proceedings. Participants were encouraged to express themselves through movement, discovering an alternative form of therapy that promotes emotional release and physical wellness. The session underscored the potential of DMT as a tool for unlocking emotions that often remain unspoken.

The event also witnessed the launch of 'Qualia-Verse', the department’s annual e-magazine. This publication aims to continue the conversation beyond the confines of the day's events, providing a platform for students and scholars to explore mental health topics in depth.

A Continuing Commitment

Loreto College's commitment to mental health is not confined to annual observances. With a curriculum that integrates psychological education and practical support, the institution stands as a beacon for holistic development in a rapidly changing world. By fostering a culture of openness and support, the college continues to address the mental health challenges that students face today.

As the day drew to a close, the message was clear: mental health is not a solitary journey but a shared responsibility. Through mindfulness, emotional awareness, and innovative therapies like DMT, Loreto College is paving the way for a future where mental well-being is at the forefront of educational discourse.
