Morocco's Gen Z: From Protest to Polls

As the warm Moroccan sun dips below the horizon, the atmosphere in Rabat is charged with anticipation. A year ago, the streets of Morocco were alive with the fervour of Gen Z-led protests, demanding better public services, jobs, and political accountability. Today, the focus has shifted from placards and chants to the ballot box, as the country's youth prepare to make their voices heard in the upcoming parliamentary elections on 23rd September.

Morocco's younger generation, characterised by their digital fluency and global outlook, are at a crossroads. Disillusionment with the political establishment runs deep, fuelled by years of corruption and broken promises. Yet, there is a palpable sense of hope, a belief that change is possible if they engage with the political process.

A Legacy of Unkept Promises

The protests last year were a manifestation of long-standing grievances. Young Moroccans took to the streets, demanding reforms in education and health services, areas plagued by underfunding and inefficiency. The violent response to these protests, culminating in the tragic deaths of three demonstrators, only strengthened their resolve.

King Mohammed VI himself has acknowledged the issues, urging officials to address social injustices. However, for many young voters, these calls for reform have yet to translate into tangible change. The challenge lies in transforming protest into policy, and for Gen Z, the upcoming elections are a critical juncture.

The Road Ahead

The appeal of fresh faces in the political arena cannot be understated. Young candidates, themselves products of this digital age, are campaigning vigorously, promising to bridge the gap between the government and the governed. They speak the language of the youth, both literally and metaphorically, advocating for transparency, accountability, and meaningful reform.

Yet scepticism remains. Voter apathy, particularly among the young, is a formidable barrier. Many are wary of the entrenched political culture, questioning whether new leaders can truly effect change. Nonetheless, the potential of Gen Z to reshape Morocco's political landscape is undeniable.

As the nation stands on the cusp of what could be a transformative election, the power of Morocco's youth to drive change is increasingly evident. Whether disillusionment gives way to a new era of political engagement remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Gen Z is no longer content to remain on the sidelines.
