Mysuru's Education Programmes Struggle Against Rising ST Dropouts

In the shadow of Mysuru's palatial grandeur, a stark reality silently unfolds. Despite the myriad of government initiatives, the dropout rate among Scheduled Tribe students in the region is escalating. The recent survey conducted by the Mysuru City Corporation has revealed a disconcerting figure: 116 students have abandoned their education within the city limits.

The issue, while not entirely new, has gained a renewed urgency in light of these figures. The Indian government has long championed educational access, yet the gap persists, particularly among marginalised communities. Efforts under the Samagra Shiksha programme and policies inspired by NEP 2020 have aimed to universalise education by 2030. However, these targets seem increasingly ambitious given the current dropout rates.

Socio-economic Challenges

Underlying this educational gap are deep-rooted socio-economic challenges. Many families from Scheduled Tribes face financial constraints, compelling children to prioritise work over education. The lack of adequate infrastructure and resources in schools further exacerbates the issue. Though hostels and scholarships are available, they remain underutilised due to lack of awareness or bureaucratic hurdles.

The Minister of State for Education, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, noted in a recent statement, "While strides have been made, there is a pressing need to address the socio-economic barriers that prevent sustained educational engagement."

Local Initiatives and Future Prospects

In response to the alarming dropout rates, local authorities in Mysuru are doubling down on efforts to bring children back to classrooms. Initiatives include community outreach programmes, counselling sessions for families, and partnerships with NGOs to provide additional support.

Yet, the path forward is fraught with challenges. Ensuring that these efforts translate into tangible outcomes requires not only policy intervention but also community involvement. As Mysuru endeavours to tackle this educational conundrum, the spotlight remains on whether these measures can indeed bridge the gap for its Scheduled Tribe students.
