Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh Honoured as 2026 Public Health Champion

In a ceremony underscoring the triumph of dedication and innovation in public health, the Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS) has emerged as a beacon of hope. The organisation was lauded this week with the 2026 WHO South-East Asia Regional Award for Public Health Champions, an accolade that highlights its significant strides in combating avoidable blindness.

Founded in 1978, NNJS has transformed the landscape of ophthalmic care in Nepal, offering essential services in a country where access to healthcare can be a daunting challenge. Their comprehensive approach includes mobile eye camps, surgical interventions, and public awareness campaigns, greatly reducing the prevalence of preventable blindness.

Dr Catharina Boehme, the Officer-in-Charge of WHO South-East Asia, praised the recipients, noting that the award recognises efforts that resonate far beyond their immediate communities. 'The NNJS has not only improved lives in Nepal but also set an inspiring example for other nations in the region,' she said.

This year's awards come at a critical juncture, with the region grappling with various health crises, including an active Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala, India. The backdrop of these challenges makes the achievements of organisations like NNJS all the more significant, as they represent resilience and progress amid adversity.

Other awardees include institutions and individuals whose relentless pursuit of public health improvements has led to lasting change. The awards serve as a reminder of the ongoing battle against health inequities and the shared responsibility to uplift societies through better health practices.
