Online Violence Fuels Unseen Mental Health Emergency in Children

In the age of digital immersion, a silent spectre looms over the mental well-being of children: online violence. Experts have raised the alarm, pointing to an impending mental health crisis that is quietly taking root amongst the younger demographic. The insidious nature of online abuse often goes unnoticed, yet its impact is profound, leaving lasting scars on young minds.

Despite the rising tide of this issue, mental health services remain woefully underfunded and inaccessible in many parts of the world. Take Uganda, for instance, where mental health receives less than one per cent of the national health budget. The lack of resources not only hampers early intervention but also perpetuates a cycle of neglect and stigma surrounding mental health issues.

As the new academic year beckons, teachers brace for what they describe as an 'explosion' of anxiety and related disorders among children returning to school. The anticipated wave of referrals to mental health services underscores the urgent need for a robust support system. Yet, with services stretched thin, the question remains: are we prepared to handle this surge?

Adolescents, in particular, find themselves ensnared in a web of social exclusion and discrimination, further complicating their willingness to seek help. The stigma attached to mental health issues often deters them from reaching out, exacerbating their plight.

In South Africa, a similar crisis looms, with mental health challenges among men going largely unaddressed. The common thread across these scenarios is the pressing need for a societal shift towards prioritising mental health as an integral part of overall wellness.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, experts urge parents to weave emotional wellness into the fabric of daily life. By fostering open conversations and creating a safe environment for children to express their feelings, we can begin to dismantle the barriers that silence their voices.

As we navigate the complexities of this digital era, it is imperative to recognise and address the mental health repercussions of online violence. The well-being of our children—and indeed, the future of our societies—depends on it.
