PM Modi to Engage Youth at Khelo India Dialogue on Sports Day
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to address the nation’s burgeoning sporting talent during the Khelo India Dialogue, a highlight of National Sports Day 2026. Scheduled to be delivered via video conferencing at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Modi’s speech is expected to resonate with young athletes across India.
The event, orchestrated by Mera Yuva Bharat, coincides with celebrations in two colleges within every district of Punjab, Haryana, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. It signifies a concerted effort to foster a robust sporting culture at the grassroots level.
Reviving the Spirit of Sports
The Prime Minister’s address is anticipated to underscore the importance of sports in nurturing discipline, teamwork, and resilience among the youth. By engaging directly with young people, Modi aims to bridge the gap between government initiatives and grassroots realities, ensuring that policies are not just announcements but tangible opportunities.
National Sports Day, observed annually on 29th August, commemorates the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. This year’s celebrations, however, have been advanced to 27th August, aligning with the Khelo India initiative to maximise participation and impact.
Building a Sporting Nation
The Khelo India programme, launched in 2018, has been pivotal in identifying and nurturing young talent, offering them a platform to excel at national and international levels. Modi’s engagement is likely to further invigorate this mission, reflecting his government’s commitment to transforming India into a sporting powerhouse.
By focusing on infrastructure development, coaching, and athlete support, the initiative seeks to cultivate a generation for whom sports is not merely a pastime but a viable career path. The dialogue will also serve as a platform for participants to voice their aspirations and challenges, thus shaping the future trajectory of sports in India.
As the nation gears up for this significant event, the Prime Minister's words are expected to inspire and mobilise a new wave of enthusiasm among India’s sports enthusiasts, reinforcing the notion that sports are integral to personal and national development.
