Rising Participation in Indian Women's Sports Faces Persistent Judgement

In a country where cricket is practically a religion, the sight of women wielding the willow with aplomb is becoming increasingly common. A recent report by the BBC and Collective Newsroom reveals a doubling of women’s participation in cricket since 2020, signalling a significant cultural shift. However, the applause for this progress is muted by a persistent undercurrent of judgement faced by sportswomen in India.

The report, titled Attitudes towards Women’s Sports, Sportswomen and Women in India, underscores a paradox. While more Indian women are playing and watching sports, they remain subject to scrutiny over their appearance and the perceived entertainment value of their games. The participation in cricket has risen from 5 per cent in 2020 to 10 per cent, yet societal perceptions change at a glacial pace.

Tim Awford, Regional Director, South Asia, BBC News, expressed cautious optimism: “It is encouraging to see that more Indian women are playing, following and watching sport compared with 2020.” Yet, the challenges persist. Many still dismiss women's sports as less competitive, a bias that undermines the achievements of athletes who strive against the odds.

Notably, the research found that one in four young women aged between 15 and 24 are contemplating sports as a career. This is a promising development, hinting at a future where sportswomen in India might finally gain the recognition they deserve.

However, the path to equality is fraught with hurdles. The fixation on physical appearance over performance and the trivialisation of women's sports as mere sideshows to men's events are entrenched issues. Addressing these biases requires more than just participation; it necessitates a cultural transformation.

In a society slowly awakening to the prowess of its sportswomen, the road ahead is challenging yet hopeful. As more young women lace up their boots and take to the fields, the hope is that one day soon, they will be judged not by their gender, but by their sporting prowess.
