Tamil Nadu to Intensify Crackdown on Plastic Bags
The bustling streets of Tamil Nadu are set to witness a significant shift as the government intensifies its ban on plastic bags. The Minister for Environment has declared a crackdown, emphasising that the rules will be enforced with newfound rigour. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to combat the state's mounting plastic waste issue, which has long plagued its cities and rural locales alike.
Since its inception in 2019, Tamil Nadu's plastic ban has been a cornerstone of its environmental policy, predating even the national ban on single-use plastics. However, despite these early efforts, the state continues to generate an estimated 1,178 tonnes of plastic waste daily, a staggering figure that underscores the urgency of the minister's latest announcement.
A Renewed Commitment to Sustainability
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has been at the forefront of this battle, promoting the 'Meendum Manjappai' campaign which encourages the use of cloth bags over their plastic counterparts. While there have been discussions about permitting non-woven plastic bags exceeding 60 GSM, the board remains resolute in its advocacy for sustainable alternatives.
Financial incentives have also been earmarked to bolster these efforts. The TNPCB has allocated Rs 10 crore to urban local bodies, with the Greater Chennai Corporation receiving the lion's share. This funding is intended to support waste management initiatives and enhance public awareness, crucial steps in ensuring the ban's success.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
Enforcing such a ban is not without its challenges. Small businesses and street vendors, who heavily rely on plastic bags, are expected to face significant adjustments. The government, however, is optimistic that with adequate support and public cooperation, these hurdles can be overcome.
