Technology: Enhancing Human Dignity, Not Diminishing It

In a poignant address at the Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology's 34th convocation, Justice A.D. Jagadish Chandra of the Madras High Court illuminated a fundamental principle that resonates deeply in our tech-driven age: technology should serve to bolster human dignity, not erode it.

Justice Chandra's remarks are timely, given the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and automation, which have sparked global debates about the ethical implications of technology. His speech underscored the importance of ensuring that technological progress does not come at the expense of humanity's intrinsic values.

Emphasising the need for diverse representation, particularly of women in STEM fields, Justice Chandra remarked, "Women must be present as scientists, engineers, architects, researchers, entrepreneurs, judges, educators, and leaders." This call for inclusion highlights the ongoing struggle for gender equality in sectors historically dominated by men.

The conversation around technology's role in society also includes its potential to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. Assistive technologies, such as screen readers and voice tools, have empowered those with visual impairments to operate smartphones independently, thereby restoring a sense of autonomy and dignity.

Yet, as Justice Chandra eloquently conveyed, the essence of technology should not solely be about convenience or efficiency. It should fundamentally be about enhancing the human experience. Echoing the sentiments of John Donne, Justice Chandra suggests that when technology diminishes any individual, it diminishes us all. Thus, the true challenge lies in navigating these innovations ethically, ensuring they uplift rather than diminish human dignity.

As we stand at the crossroads of unprecedented technological change, the onus is on policymakers, technologists, and society at large to heed Justice Chandra's call. The future of technology should be one where advancement and humanity walk hand in hand.
