Urgent Call for Action to Preserve J&K's Pristine Lakes
In the serene landscapes of Jammu and Kashmir, a silent crisis is brewing. The state's six major lakes and its vast array of wetlands are facing threats that, if left unchecked, could see them forever altered. This week, the Committee on Environment put forth an urgent call for action, underscoring the need for immediate conservation measures.
The lakes—Hokersar, Mansabal, Wular, Nigeen, Mansar, and Surinsar—are not just hydrographic features; they are the lifeblood of the region's biodiversity. These water bodies support a wide array of flora and fauna, serving as crucial habitats for migratory birds and numerous aquatic species. However, their ecological balance is under severe threat from encroachment, pollution, and illegal waste dumping, particularly in areas like Pulwama.
To address these challenges, the committee has proposed a series of actions. Among them is the development of a dedicated State-level portal, a digital initiative aimed at enhancing transparency and accessibility. This portal will feature detailed layers outlining forest boundaries and the Wildlife Department's protected area networks.
Furthermore, the National Green Tribunal has demanded a response from the state regarding illegal waste disposal, with departments directed to submit time-bound Action Taken Reports. Such measures, although promising, will require robust implementation to ensure their efficacy.
Globally, the significance of wetlands is being recognised, as seen in initiatives like Wetlands International's efforts connecting local peatland restoration in Mongolia to global environmental action. These examples highlight the potential impact of effective wetland conservation strategies.
As Jammu and Kashmir works to protect its natural treasures, it stands at a crossroads. The successful preservation of its lakes and wetlands could serve as a model for environmental stewardship, both within India and beyond. But this will require not just government action, but also community engagement and vigilance.
