Analysing 220 fish from 12 different species across Haryana and Delhi, researchers found a staggering 1,678 microplastic particles. The concentration was notably higher in fish collected from the Delhi stretch of the river, illustrating the capital's struggle with pollution.

The Invisible Peril of Microplastics

Microplastics, tiny fragments of plastic less than five millimetres in size, have been increasingly scrutinised for their environmental impact. Their presence in oceans and remote regions is well-documented, but their infiltration into freshwater systems like the Yamuna is a burgeoning concern.

Dr. Anil Sharma, a leading researcher on the subject, remarked, "Microplastics pose an insidious threat, not just to marine life but potentially to human health as well. Their ability to enter the food chain is troubling."

Health Concerns on the Rise

While the full extent of health risks associated with microplastics remains under investigation, preliminary studies suggest they could contribute to conditions such as oxidative stress and inflammation. Such health issues could, in turn, lead to more serious ailments like cardiovascular disease.
