AIFF and Capri Sports Forge 15-Year Deal to Boost Women's Football

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has embarked on a bold journey to reshape women's football in India by entering into a 15-year partnership with Capri Sports. This landmark deal, announced earlier this week, grants Capri Sports the commercial development and marketing rights for the Indian Women's League (IWL) and its second tier, IWL 2.

In a country where cricket has long overshadowed other sports, this collaboration is seen as a significant step toward elevating the profile of women's football. Capri Sports, known for its growing influence in the sports sector, particularly in women's cricket, plans to leverage its expertise to revitalise the leagues. The focus will be on strengthening club structures, enhancing fan engagement, and expanding the digital and broadcast footprint of the IWL.

A Vision for Growth

AIFF Deputy Secretary General M Satyanarayan expressed optimism about the partnership, emphasising the potential for increased visibility and investment in women's football. 'With Capri Sports on board, we have an opportunity to build greater visibility for the leagues, create stronger club cultures, and engage more fans,' he remarked.

The move is also strategic for Capri Sports, which sees the untapped potential in women's football as an avenue for growth. By investing in the grassroots and nurturing talent from the ground up, both parties aim to create a pipeline of skilled players who could eventually represent India on the international stage.

Challenges and Opportunities

While the partnership offers immense potential, it also comes with its set of challenges. The task of changing perceptions, increasing participation, and ensuring financial sustainability will require concerted efforts from all stakeholders involved. Yet, the long-term nature of the agreement allows for a gradual and sustained approach to addressing these hurdles.

As this partnership unfolds, the hope is that it will not only benefit the players and clubs but also inspire a new generation of female footballers across India. Whether it can achieve its lofty ambitions remains to be seen, but for now, it signals a promising new chapter in Indian women's football.
