AMCs Boost Investment in Staff and Tech Amid Industry Growth

In the bustling corridors of India's financial sector, Asset Management Companies (AMCs) are making calculated strides to fortify their operations. With the mutual fund industry gaining momentum, AMCs have turned their gaze inward, investing heavily in their workforce and technology to bolster efficiency and sharpen their competitive edge.

The fiscal year 2026 has witnessed a notable uptick in spending by AMCs on both employees and technology. For many large fund houses, this investment is not just about keeping pace with the industry's growth but about outpacing it. The logic is straightforward: greater scale provides larger AMCs with an inherent advantage, an edge sharpened further through strategic spending.

According to a recent assessment by Equirus, operational efficiency among these companies is being scrutinised more than ever. By excluding fees and commission expenses, the focus narrows on employee and operational costs. The findings reveal a stark contrast: while some companies have efficiently managed to keep these expenses below 20% of their revenue, others, like Canara Robeco AMC and Axis AMC, find themselves grappling with costs that gobble up over 40% of their incoming funds.

This divergence speaks volumes about the competitive pressures in the sector. Large AMCs, through their expansive resources, can invest in cutting-edge technology and in training their workforce, thus maintaining a lean operational model. On the other hand, smaller players, despite their best efforts, often find themselves mired in the challenges of scaling up without a proportional rise in efficiency.

Overseas investments by these funds have also seen a remarkable surge, with assets rising by 23.9% to reach a staggering US$10.2 billion at the end of March 2026. This increase is primarily attributed to the allure of foreign equity securities, which have become a favoured avenue for diversification amidst global market volatility.

The road ahead for AMCs is as challenging as it is promising. As they continue to balance their books, the focus remains clear: smart spending on human and technological resources is not merely a choice but a necessity in an increasingly competitive market.
