Belgium Ensures Defence Neutrality: No Cooperation with Pakistan
In a move that underscores the delicacy of international defence relations, Belgium has assured India that it will not engage in any defence cooperation with Pakistan. This assurance was conveyed during bilateral talks between India's Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, and his Belgian counterpart, Theo Francken, amidst a backdrop of heightened regional tensions.
During the discussions, Rajnath Singh raised significant concerns about the potential transfer of advanced military technology to Pakistan, which India fears could be misused. Singh highlighted the possibility of such technologies being employed for activities linked to terrorism, an issue that remains a thorn in the side of Indo-Pakistan relations.
Belgium's assurance comes as part of a broader diplomatic engagement coinciding with the visit of Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever to India. The visit saw the signing of ten defence agreements, marking a new chapter in Indo-Belgian relations.
India's Firm Stance on Terrorism
India's approach towards cross-border terrorism has been unequivocal. Referring to Operation Sindoor, Singh emphasised that India will not distinguish between terrorist entities and the states that harbour them. This position aims to send a clear message to the international community about India's hardline stance against any form of terrorism.
The assurance from Belgium is particularly significant in light of recent developments in the region, including Saudi Arabia's mutual defence pact with Pakistan. Such moves have added to the complexity of defence dynamics in South Asia.
Belgium's commitment to abstain from defence ties with Pakistan reflects a deeper understanding of India's security concerns and could pave the way for enhanced bilateral cooperation in non-controversial areas.
As the South Asian region continues to grapple with security challenges, Belgium's stance may serve as a diplomatic model for other nations navigating the intricate web of defence partnerships and geopolitical alliances.
