Bengaluru Buses Embrace Technology with ADAS Rollout

In a city where traffic chaos often reigns supreme, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is taking a technological leap forward. Fifty buses will soon be equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) as part of a pilot programme designed to enhance road safety. This move comes amidst growing concerns over vehicular accidents and aims to set a precedent for public transport safety.

The ADAS technology, currently operational in five buses, employs a sophisticated array of sensors and cameras. These devices provide real-time monitoring and alerts, ensuring that drivers maintain appropriate distances and adhere to traffic norms. With unit numbers 10 and 26 already navigating the 500 ‘D’ routes, the initial results have been promising, prompting plans for expansion.

A Technological Milestone

The introduction of ADAS in Bengaluru is not merely about adopting new technology; it represents a significant shift towards prioritising passenger safety. During the pilot phase, each bus is equipped with a vision sensor camera, a driver monitoring system (DMS), and GPS units. These components work in tandem, capturing and analysing data to provide real-time feedback to drivers.

In recent months, this technology was showcased to Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy and senior BMTC officials, who expressed optimism about its potential to reduce accidents. The pilot programme is scheduled to run for three months, after which data will be analysed to determine its efficacy.

Looking Forward

Should the trial prove successful, BMTC envisions a broader implementation across its entire fleet. This initiative is part of a wider effort to modernise public transport systems under the Nirbhaya scheme, which already incorporates surveillance systems in 5,000 buses.

As Bengaluru grapples with its traffic woes, the introduction of ADAS could well be a step towards a safer commute. This project not only underscores the importance of technological integration in public transport but also highlights the city's commitment to safeguarding its commuters.
