Bhupender Yadav Calls for Robust Biodiversity Governance
In a spirited address at a national biodiversity meet in Chandigarh, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav underscored the urgent need for improved biodiversity governance across India. With an eye on both local and global imperatives, Yadav laid out his vision for an environmentally resilient India.
Amidst the gathering, Yadav spotlighted the commendable achievements of the National Biodiversity Authority, particularly its distribution of Rs 200 crore in benefits to local communities and states. Such initiatives, he argued, are vital in fostering a sustainable and inclusive approach to environmental management.
Aligning with Global Frameworks
Yadav's discourse also touched upon India's Updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for 2024–2030, which aligns seamlessly with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). This alignment, Yadav noted, is crucial for harmonising India's biodiversity efforts with global standards and addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by environmental degradation.
Yadav further highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's environmentally progressive initiatives such as Mission LiFE, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, and the Green Credit Programme. These programmes, he suggested, encapsulate India's long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship.
Local Empowerment and Strategic Planning
Emphasising the importance of local involvement, Yadav urged states and Union Territories to bolster their biodiversity bodies. He pointed out that robust local biodiversity records can significantly aid planning and development, ensuring that environmental considerations are woven into the fabric of governance.
While these discussions set the stage for future policies, Yadav's call to action serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between development and conservation. As India grapples with the dual demands of economic growth and environmental conservation, the minister's emphasis on stronger governance and local empowerment seems both timely and essential.
