Bhupender Yadav Calls for Robust Biodiversity Governance
In the grand assembly rooms of the 4th Indo-German Environment Forum, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav took to the podium with an urgent message. Emphasising the necessity for robust biodiversity governance, Yadav highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing the pressing environmental challenges of our time.
Striking a chord with the audience, Yadav spoke of the ‘One Earth, One World, One Future’ vision, a cornerstone of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's environmental policy. This vision, he noted, has already united 17 member countries under the International Biodiversity Conservation Alliance (IBCA), with interest from many more.
“We must collaborate, not compete,” Yadav asserted, calling for a collective effort to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation — challenges that do not recognise borders. He stressed that knowledge sharing and scalable solutions are key to overcoming these issues.
The minister also spotlighted India’s commitment to community-led conservation, citing the success of initiatives like the Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) framework and Project Cheetah. These programmes, he argued, exemplify how local action can drive global impact.
International Cooperation and Local Action
Yadav's remarks come at a critical juncture as nations grapple with the impacts of environmental degradation. The theme of the upcoming International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, ‘Acting Locally for Global Impact,’ resonates with his call for action.
He highlighted the Indo-German partnership as a model for international cooperation. By sharing technology and building institutional capacity, Yadav believes countries can better address the multifaceted challenges posed by environmental change.
In closing, Yadav urged for a renewed commitment to biodiversity governance, warning that time is of the essence. His call for enhanced global solidarity serves as a reminder that the efforts to preserve our planet must transcend political and geographical divides.
