Bihar Floods: Education Drowns as Schools Close
As the monsoon rains batter Bihar, the state finds itself grappling with a crisis that seems to recur with grim predictability. The Ganges and other rivers, swollen beyond their banks, have yet again turned large swathes of the region into vast, unwelcoming lakes. Amongst the multitude of woes brought by these deluges, education stands as a silent casualty.
In the Parbatta block, 17 schools have shuttered their doors, leaving students and teachers alike in a state of limbo. Dileep Kumar, the headmaster of the middle school at Goriyasi in Nayagaon, voices a concern that echoes across the region: "We don’t know when we will be able to resume classes." His tone, though measured, betrays a deep-seated frustration.
The Ripple Effect
The situation isn't limited to Parbatta. The Department of Education reports disruptions across 50 blocks and 201 gram panchayats. The floodwaters have not only inundated school buildings but also severed access routes, making it perilous for students to reach any institution that might still be operational.
In Darbhanga, one of the hardest-hit districts, the human toll has been tragic, with 12 reported fatalities. Such losses cast a long shadow over the community, impacting not just immediate families but the broader social fabric. For schoolchildren, this means not just an interruption in education, but a suspension of the supportive environment that schools provide.
Government Response
The Bihar government faces mounting pressure to act decisively. As the flood situation worsens, the need for a robust, long-term strategy becomes ever more apparent. Temporary relief measures, though necessary, offer scant comfort against the backdrop of a predictable seasonal calamity.
Efforts to curb the floods are being discussed, with suggestions ranging from improved infrastructure to better water management practices. However, these solutions require time, investment, and political will, all of which are in short supply.
As the waters slowly recede, the task of rebuilding will begin anew. For the students of Bihar, the hope is that their education will not become yet another casualty of these relentless floods.
