CASHe's Lending Woes: A Once-Promising Fintech Falters
In the world of fintech, where promising beginnings often capture the imagination, CASHe's journey has taken an unexpected turn. Once a beacon of potential, the app-only lending platform finds its lending business shrinking to a shadow of its former self, despite a fresh infusion of $3.07 million in debt funding from IFMR Capital.
The platform, which targets young professionals aged 25-35 across India, seemed poised to revolutionise consumer lending. With salaries ranging from 2.5 to 25 lakhs, these professionals were seen as an ideal demographic. However, the reality has been somewhat different.
Stumbling Blocks
CASHe’s challenges are manifold. The most significant hurdle has been the high user drop-off rate during the Know Your Customer (KYC) and profile completion processes. Although the company attempted to streamline these procedures, many potential borrowers abandoned the application mid-way, leading to a reduced customer base.
Moreover, the saturation of the fintech lending market in India has intensified competition. Numerous players, many with deeper pockets and more established brands, have carved out significant niches, leaving CASHe struggling to maintain its foothold.
Future Prospects
Despite these setbacks, CASHe remains optimistic about its future. Joginder Rana, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, emphasised the company's readiness to seize opportunities, even amidst the Covid-19 waves. However, optimism alone may not suffice in a market that demands innovation and resilience.
While CASHe plans to enhance its services and expand its loan book, it must address the fundamental issues that have hampered growth. Whether CASHe can navigate these turbulent waters and reclaim its position in the fintech arena remains an open question.
