CJI Surya Kant Sees Digital Tools Empowering Small-Town Lawyers
In an era where technology dictates the pace of change, Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, has thrown the spotlight on its transformative impact within the legal profession. Speaking at a recent conference, he noted that digital tools have not only democratised access to legal resources but have also levelled the playing field for lawyers across India.
For decades, the wealth of legal knowledge and research tools remained the preserve of metropolitan centres. However, the advent of technology has extended these resources to smaller towns, empowering local practitioners to compete on an equal footing with their urban counterparts. "Technology has bridged the geographical divide that once hampered access to legal resources," Justice Kant remarked, emphasising the pivotal role technology plays in enhancing the judiciary's effectiveness.
Moreover, he praised the younger generation of lawyers and judicial officers for embracing digital transformation. The swift adoption of electronic records and platforms like the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) has streamlined processes and reduced administrative burdens. These innovations, Justice Kant noted, have enabled courts to better fulfil their constitutional duties.
Yet, the Chief Justice cautioned against a one-size-fits-all approach. He argued for a 'Swadeshi Jurisprudence' in the digital era, advocating that technological advancements should align with India's unique social realities and constitutional traditions. This approach seeks to ensure that the legal system remains grounded in its cultural and historical context, even as it evolves.
The democratisation of the legal profession through technology is more than a mere convenience; it is a step towards a more equitable justice system.
