Court Orders Halt to Construction Near Pilibhit Tiger Reserve
In an assertive move to curb environmental degradation, the courts have clamped down on the rampant construction activities encroaching upon the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve in Uttar Pradesh. The decision, handed down on 27 July 2026, follows a damning report by a joint committee, which painted a stark picture of unchecked development within a stone's throw of the reserve.
The report, dated 24 July, highlighted numerous new permanent structures sprouting up within just 1 km of the reserve's boundary. In response, the court has reiterated its previous order dated 11 August 2025, directing Banaras Hindu University to plant 20 trees for every tree felled illegally, thereby necessitating the plantation of 660 new trees.
