Drass Prepares for National Sports Day and Youth Month Festivities
In the heart of the Himalayas, Drass is bustling with preparations for two significant occasions: National Sports Day 2026 and Youth Engagement Month. At the helm of these arrangements is Deputy Commissioner Imteeaz Kacho, who recently chaired a meeting to ensure the events run as smoothly as the River Dras flows through the valley.
National Sports Day, celebrated on 29th August to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, is set to be a grand affair in Drass. The Deputy Commissioner has called upon local sports organisations, educational institutions, and community leaders to contribute to a series of activities aimed at encouraging youth participation.
"Our objective is to ignite a passion for sports among the youth of Drass, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and healthy competition," said Kacho. The district administration is collaborating with local clubs to organise football, cricket, and traditional Ladakhi sports tournaments.
Engaging the Youth
The Youth Engagement Month, running concurrently, promises to be equally vibrant. With a range of workshops, seminars, and cultural programmes, the initiative aims to harness the energy of Drass's young populace. The focus will be on skill development and cultural awareness, ensuring that the youth are not only entertained but also educated.
Drass, often known for its harsh winters and strategic significance, is embracing a softer image with these events. The Deputy Commissioner emphasised the importance of these initiatives in promoting unity and cultural pride. "Through sports and cultural exchange, we hope to build bridges within our community," he remarked.
A Cultural Tapestry
The events coincide with the Drass Festival, expected to draw tourists eager to experience the unique blend of adventure sports, cultural exhibits, and local cuisine. The festival serves as a backdrop, adding a layer of cultural richness to the sporting and youth engagement activities.
As Drass prepares for this blend of sport, culture, and youth empowerment, the district stands ready to showcase its vibrant spirit to both locals and visitors alike. In a place where the past often casts a long shadow, these events mark a forward-looking celebration of what the future can bring for the youth of Drass.
