FCIK Rebukes GCC's Concerns Over Business Act as Baseless

The Federation of Chambers of Industries Kashmir (FCIK) has come out swinging against the Group of Concerned Citizens (GCC), labelling their criticisms of the Jammu and Kashmir Ease of Doing Business Act, 2026, as baseless and misleading. At the heart of the controversy is the GCC's assertion that the act favours industrial interests at the expense of local livelihoods.

FCIK, however, argues that the legislation is meticulously crafted to dismantle bureaucratic hurdles and enhance the investment climate without compromising on social welfare. "It's a balancing act, not a zero-sum game," an FCIK spokesperson remarked, emphasising that streamlined regulations are pivotal for attracting investors who, in turn, generate jobs and improve living standards.

Challenging Misconceptions

The GCC's apprehensions, according to FCIK, stem from a fundamental misunderstanding. The ease of doing business, they contend, is not an adversary to ease of living, but rather its ally. Industrial growth, FCIK posits, is a catalyst for broader economic development, directly boosting household incomes and government revenues.

FCIK further criticised the GCC's portrayal of the act as an encroachment on local priorities. "Meaningful ease of living is impossible without opportunities for earning a dignified livelihood," FCIK stated, pointing out that the act includes provisions to ensure that economic growth translates into tangible benefits for the local population.

The Bigger Picture

Beyond the immediate squabble, the debate highlights a broader tension in policy-making: balancing economic development with social welfare. While the GCC fears that the act might tip the scales unfavourably, FCIK insists that the measures are designed to create a synergy between business efficiency and community prosperity.

As the discussion unfolds, the challenge remains to ensure that the act delivers on its promises without sidelining the very people it aims to uplift. For now, the spotlight is on how effectively these policies can bridge gaps and foster an environment where industry and community thrive together.
