From Eve-Teased Teen to Champion: Suchika Tariyal's Remarkable Journey
In the small town of Budhana, Uttar Pradesh, the story of Suchika Tariyal began with an act of cowardice. At the age of 12, she was subjected to the distressing experience of eve-teasing. What could have been a scar on her psyche turned into a catalyst for an extraordinary journey in combat sports.
Suchika's introduction to judo was not borne of ambition but necessity. Her initial steps on the mat were driven by a desire for self-defence. Yet, as it turned out, judo was only the beginning of a remarkable career that spans over two decades and multiple disciplines.
Rising Through the Ranks
As an eight-time national judo champion, Suchika's prowess on the tatami was well recognised. However, her ambitions were not confined to a single sport. She transitioned to ju-jitsu, where she clinched gold in the 2024 JJIF Ju-Jitsu World Championships, a testament to her versatility and skill.
Suchika's foray into Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in 2017 marked another pivotal chapter. Her journey through the professional circuit has been characterised by grit and resilience, attributes that were first kindled by that fateful encounter at 12.
Making History
Now, at 36, Suchika Tariyal has etched her name into the annals of Indian sports history. She assured India of its first MMA medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, defeating Mongolia's Altanchimeg Baigalmaa to secure her place in the semifinals of the women's Traditional MMA 60kg event.
Suchika's journey is more than a personal triumph; it is an inspiring narrative for many young women in India and beyond. Her story is a reminder that adversity can forge strength, and that the past need not dictate the future.
