Gen Z Marches: NEP Sparks Student Uprisings Across India
On a humid July morning, the streets of Delhi echoed with chants of 'Education for all, not just the rich!' Led by a generation often dismissed as apathetic, India's Gen Z is proving its mettle with an unprecedented wave of protests against the National Education Policy (NEP). The policy, which critics argue undermines public universities, has become a lightning rod for broader discontent.
The government's 2026 reform, touted as a modernisation effort, has been accused of prioritising private over public education, effectively sidelining economically disadvantaged students. In response, thousands of young Indians have taken to the streets, their frustrations fuelled not only by educational inequities but also by what they perceive as rampant corruption and an ostentatious display of wealth by public officials.
Adding fuel to the fire, a sweeping ban on social media platforms such as YouTube and Instagram has attempted to silence dissent. Yet, these measures appear to have backfired, galvanising students to gather in larger numbers than before. Portraits of social reformers Jotirao and Savitribai Phule, symbols of educational equality, are carried aloft, reminding the nation of its unfinished business in achieving true educational parity.
Why the NEP Matters
The NEP's emphasis on vocational training and digital learning, while beneficial in theory, has been criticised for its lack of support for traditional academic disciplines. Students argue this creates a two-tier system—one that favours those who can afford private institutions.
Moreover, the policy's shift towards English as the primary medium of instruction in higher education is seen as exclusionary, threatening to marginalise those for whom English is not a first language. This has sparked accusations of cultural erasure, particularly among India’s diverse linguistic communities.
A Generation's Fight
The protests are emblematic of Gen Z’s growing political consciousness. The generation that grew up in the digital age is now confronting the very system that controls their online expressions.
