Gen Z's Stand: The CJP Protest at Jantar Mantar

In the heart of Delhi, where history and modernity intertwine, Jantar Mantar has become a stage for voices of dissent. This time, it's Gen Z leading the charge. The Collective for Justice in Education (CJP) has assembled here, casting a spotlight on perceived inadequacies within India's education system, with the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) as their focal point.

The protest, marked by placards and passionate speeches, crystallises a growing frustration amongst young Indians. Ashutosh Ranka, one of the protest leaders, has made their intentions crystal clear: “We won’t leave Jantar Mantar until Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns.” The accusation is severe—that of neglecting an education system plagued by corruption and inefficiency.

Jantar Mantar, once an astronomical marvel, is now the backdrop for this modern struggle. Historically, Delhi’s Boat Club served as the epicentre for protest, but restrictions have shifted demonstrations to this iconic site. The shift only adds to the symbolic weight of the protest, as young voices echo against the ancient walls.

The CJP’s ire is particularly directed at NEET, which many students find to be an insurmountable barrier rather than a fair gatekeeper to medical education. Critics argue that the exam perpetuates inequality and fails to accommodate diverse educational backgrounds.

While the protest's immediate demands focus on ministerial resignation, the underlying issues are broader and more systemic. The education system, say the protestors, is in dire need of reform to ensure equitable access and to reduce undue stress on students.

This protest is more than a demand for accountability; it is a call for a holistic reimagining of how education is delivered and assessed in one of the world's most populous nations. As the protest continues, the question remains whether these youthful voices will find resonance within the halls of power.
