Health Centre to Rise on Alleri Hillock for Tribal Communities
Perched high atop Alleri hillock, the tribal communities of Vellore have long been isolated, both geographically and in terms of access to essential services. However, a glimmer of hope has emerged with the Tamil Nadu government's decision to establish a dedicated health centre for these often-overlooked populations. The move follows a harrowing incident where a tribal man died from a snake bite, unable to reach medical care in time due to the arduous journey from the hills to the plains.
The proposed health centre is not merely a medical facility; it symbolises a step towards integrating the tribal hamlets with the broader healthcare framework of the region. As part of this initiative, discussions are underway to construct a bitumen road, which would provide a vital link between the hilltop villages and the plains, making emergency medical assistance much more accessible.
Addressing Long-standing Neglect
Collector Kumaravel Pandian, who personally trekked up the Alleri Hills, has been instrumental in pushing for these developments. His visit was not only symbolic but also a practical assessment of the needs of the tribal communities. He has urged relevant departments to ensure these communities are not left out of other welfare schemes, such as housing projects under the Adi Dravidar welfare department.
Moreover, the introduction of the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) ID is expected to streamline healthcare access for the tribals, linking them directly with state and national healthcare initiatives. Eligible individuals can create an ABHA ID, providing them with a unique health identifier linked to their Aadhaar, thus facilitating easier access to medical records and services.
Infrastructure: A Lifeline for the Future
Infrastructure development, particularly the road project, is seen as a critical lifeline. The absence of passable roads has not only curtailed healthcare access but also limited economic opportunities and educational outreach. Local authorities are now expediting processes, recognising the urgent need for connectivity to prevent further tragedies.
As these plans unfold, the hope is that such initiatives will usher in a new era of inclusion and opportunity for the tribal populations of Alleri. These efforts, however, must be sustained and accompanied by continued government support to ensure that the hillock communities are not left behind in the march towards progress.
