Indian Athletes Celebrated with Cash Awards for CWG Triumphs
Amidst a flurry of excitement and pride, India's sporting heroes were welcomed home from the Commonwealth Games 2026 with a ceremony befitting their achievements. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, led the felicitations, awarding cash prizes to the athletes whose performances have put India firmly on the global sporting map.
The ceremony, held in New Delhi, saw athletes like Mirabai Chanu being celebrated for their historic feats. Chanu, who clinched her third consecutive gold in weightlifting, was lauded not just for her triumph but for her consistent excellence over the years. She, along with other gold medallists, received a cash reward of ₹30 lakh, while silver and bronze medallists were awarded ₹20 lakh and ₹10 lakh respectively.
Immediate Recognition
This year's approach marked a significant shift from previous practices, with the Indian government ensuring that athletes receive their cash rewards immediately upon their return. This swift recognition is seen as a move to boost morale and encourage future performances.
President Droupadi Murmu, who joined the celebrations, highlighted the remarkable double podium finish in men's javelin, underscoring the dedication and excellence of India's athletes. Her presence added gravitas to the event, reinforcing the nation's pride in its sportsmen and women.
A New Era for Indian Sports
Dr Mandaviya's comments echoed the sentiment of a new era for Indian sports, where athletes are not only trained extensively under programmes like Khelo India but also celebrated and supported robustly by the government. The minister expressed hope for continued support and improvement in facilities, ensuring that future generations of athletes can achieve even greater heights.
Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also praised the athletes, acknowledging the years of preparation and passion that led to their success. He assured that the government would continue to enhance the infrastructure and support systems required to nurture talent across various sports disciplines.
As the applause died down, the message was clear: India's sporting journey is just as much about the relentless pursuit of excellence as it is about the recognition and rewards that follow. The Commonwealth Games 2026 have set a new benchmark, and the nation looks forward to even greater achievements in the future.
