India's Gen Alpha Calls for Overhaul of Education System

In the bustling streets of India's major cities, a new generation is making its voice heard. Gen Alpha, the cohort born after 2010, is stepping into the limelight with demands that echo the calls of their slightly older siblings, Gen Z. Their target? A sweeping reform of the Indian education system.

The clamour for change was unmistakably loud on 15th August, as the nation celebrated its Independence Day. Taking centre stage was the 'School Thik Karo' initiative, a grassroots movement aimed at fixing what many see as a broken system. Spearheaded by Gen Z, this initiative is now fervently supported by Gen Alpha, showing a rare intergenerational solidarity.

Among the key demands is the resignation of the Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, over controversies surrounding national medical exams. The Students’ Federation of India (SFI), which has been a prominent voice in the protests, is urging the disbandment of the National Testing Agency and the scrapping of the National Education Policy 2020. These demands underscore a pervasive dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, particularly concerning accessibility and fairness in education.

A New Generation's Digital Savvy

Gen Alpha, born into a world saturated with digital technology, wields social media as a potent tool. Their digital fluency allows them to spread their message rapidly and effectively, drawing attention both nationally and internationally. This digital activism, reminiscent of the Gen Z protests, signals a shift in how social movements are organised and sustained.

The movement's momentum can partly be attributed to the lessons learned by Gen Z, who have used humour and memes to diffuse their message. This approach not only engages a broader audience but also mitigates the risks associated with more traditional forms of protest.

The Road Ahead

The demands of Gen Alpha are not without precedent. Previous generations have called for reforms, but the urgency and clarity with which these young voices speak cannot be ignored. They represent not just the future of the nation, but a present that is increasingly impatient with the status quo.

As the movement gains traction, it remains to be seen whether the government will respond with the necessary reforms. However, one thing is certain: Gen Alpha, with the backing of Gen Z, is poised to challenge the existing norms, and their call for change is unlikely to fade quietly into the background.
