Jagan Slams 'Reckless' Education Reforms in Andhra Pradesh

In a scathing critique, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has accused the Andhra Pradesh government of a series of 'reckless decisions' that he claims have thrown the state's education department into disarray. The president of the YSR Congress Party lambasted the administration for what he perceives as a decline in educational standards and enrolment figures.

According to Jagan, the enrolment in government schools has sharply decreased over the past two years, a stark contradiction to the state's claims that over 110,000 students have transferred from private to public institutions. This discrepancy, he argues, is indicative of deeper systemic issues.

Jagan's criticisms were not limited to enrolment figures. He also highlighted procedural changes in examination management as a major concern. Previously, the responsibilities for preparing question papers and conducting exams were divided between the SCERT and the DSC Convenor. However, the government has now consolidated these roles under the SCERT Director, a move Jagan describes as bypassing established safeguards.

The situation was further compounded, according to Jagan, by the removal of an official serving as both TET and DSC convener, replaced by a Joint Commissioner from the Education Department. Such shifts, he suggests, undermine the transparency and integrity of the examination processes.

Adding to the turmoil, Jagan pointed out instances of police misconduct during protests in Visakhapatnam, which have fuelled further unrest and dissatisfaction among stakeholders. The protests were initially sparked by these controversial educational reforms.

While the government remains firm in its stance, asserting that its measures are in line with improving educational quality, Jagan's remarks serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing tensions in Andhra Pradesh's educational landscape. The outcome of these reforms, as with many contentious policies, will likely unfold in the arena of public opinion and future electoral contests.
