Karnataka Farmers Harness Biochar Technology for Sustainable Agriculture

The University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru (UAS-B), is spearheading an initiative to arm farmers with an innovative tool — biochar. This low-cost technology promises not only to revitalise depleted soils but also to combat the ever-looming threat of climate change.
Biochar, essentially charcoal used as a soil enhancer, is created by burning organic material from agricultural waste. The process locks carbon into the soil, making it a potent weapon in reducing greenhouse gases. UAS-B's programme provides farmers with the necessary equipment and training, ensuring that this ancient technique is accessible to the modern agricultural community.
