Karnataka's HDB Region: The New Tech and Manufacturing Hub
In the heart of Karnataka, where tradition meets innovation, the Hubballi-Dharwad-Belagavi (HDB) region is quietly emerging as a formidable contender in the realm of technology and manufacturing. At the heart of this transformation is the state's ambitious Beyond Bengaluru programme, seeking to decentralise growth and ignite economic dynamism outside the state's capital.
At the recent HDB Techceleration 2026 summit, Karnataka's Minister for IT, BT and Home Department, Priyank Kharge, underscored the strategic significance of the HDB corridor. 'We are investing ahead of the curve,' he declared, emphasising the state’s proactive approach in nurturing deep-tech capabilities that extend beyond the conventional boundaries of Bengaluru.
The region is not just relying on its historical prowess in industrial activities but is also bolstering its credentials in cutting-edge sectors such as electronics system design and manufacturing (ESDM), electric vehicles (EVs), and advanced engineering. This blend of tradition and modernity is precisely what makes the HDB region a compelling prospect for investors.
As Sanjeev Gupta, CEO of the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission, noted, the state is positioning itself as a leader in deep-tech innovation. This has been made possible through a series of strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the region's infrastructure and talent pool, particularly in areas like battery manufacturing, which is increasingly seen as a critical component of national energy strategies.
The burgeoning interest in the HDB region reflects a broader trend across India, where regional hubs are being developed to complement established tech centres, thereby fostering a more balanced economic growth. For Karnataka, this means not only capitalising on existing industrial capabilities but also preparing the ground for future technological advancements.
In conclusion, while Bengaluru may remain the jewel in Karnataka's crown, the HDB region is fast becoming a worthy contender. With strategic investments and a clear vision, it seems poised to play a crucial role in the state's economic narrative.
