Kerala Health Minister Denies Relief Camp Medicine Shortage Amid Political Row
Amidst the chaos wrought by torrential rains and landslides in Kerala, the state's Health Minister, Veena George, has dismissed allegations of a shortfall in medical supplies at relief camps. Her comments come in response to the opposition's claims of governmental inefficiency and political opportunism during the crisis.
The minister, speaking in Thiruvananthapuram, categorically denied any reported shortages. "There are medicines," she stated, emphasising that no formal complaints had reached the government about insufficient medical supplies in the camps. Her remarks aimed to allay public fears and counteract what she termed as politically motivated attacks.
With over 5,000 residents displaced and relocated to relief camps following the natural calamity, the opposition, led by V D Satheesan, has not minced words in criticising the government's response. Satheesan, after meeting with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, presented a list of suggested measures for the affected areas, particularly focusing on proactive disaster management and improved communication with the public.
While the health minister stood firm in her defence, the critics argue that the focus should be on action rather than rhetoric. "The disaster management team needs to be proactive," urged Satheesan, stressing the need for immediate assistance and clear, transparent updates from the authorities.
The political tug-of-war over disaster response is not new to Kerala, where monsoons frequently test the resilience of infrastructure and governance. The current imbroglio highlights the perennial challenges faced by state administrations in balancing rapid response with political accountability.
