Modi and Xi Seek Economic Growth Amidst Border Peace Efforts
When Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, the handshake was more than a mere gesture of diplomacy. It signified a renewed vigour in the Indo-Chinese relationship, one that is inching towards economic collaboration and border tranquillity.
India's imports from China have soared to an impressive $132 billion in the 2025/26 fiscal year, reinforcing China's position as India's largest source of imports. Yet, the sheer scale of this trade comes with its own set of challenges. The trade deficit, which looms over $100 billion, remains a thorny issue for New Delhi.
Despite these challenges, the two nations are taking significant steps to mend their ties. Recently, direct flights between India and China resumed after a five-year hiatus, marking a symbolic and practical step towards normalising relations. Moreover, ancient Silk Road trade routes have been reopened, offering a nod to historical connections while facilitating modern commerce.
Economic Partnership or Strategic Necessity?
For India, the relationship with China is both an economic opportunity and a strategic necessity. With the global economic landscape shifting, India sees value in aligning with China, not only to boost its own economic prospects but also to ensure stability in the region. Yet, the persistent trade imbalance is a reminder of the work that lies ahead.
As the leaders emphasised during their meeting, peace at the border is non-negotiable. The two countries have a tumultuous history regarding their shared border, and recent efforts to ease tensions have been welcomed globally. The emphasis on border peace is seen as a foundation upon which economic ties can be further built.
Looking forward, the focus is on deepening economic ties while maintaining a vigilant eye on border issues. The dialogue between Modi and Xi is a step towards a more balanced relationship, albeit one fraught with its own complexities.
