NCERT Shifts Focus to India's Medieval Resistance in New Textbook

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has stirred the educational waters with the release of its latest Class 9 Social Science textbook, 'Understanding Society: India and Beyond-Part 2'. In a move that has raised eyebrows and sparked debate, the textbook has excised chapters on European revolutions, instead offering students an in-depth exploration of India's medieval history. This revision comes in the form of expanded coverage on regional resistance movements, the subcontinent's experiences with successive invasions, and the various sovereignties that emerged between c.1000 and c.1700 CE.

Gone are the pages detailing the French and Russian Revolutions, socialism's rise in Europe, and the spectre of Nazism. In their place, students will now read about India's own turbulent past, including the rise of regional kingdoms, the construction of forts and temples, and the myriad battles for autonomy against foreign aggressors.

This educational shift is more than a mere swapping of content; it reflects an ongoing discourse about the narratives we choose to teach our children. By focusing on India's historical fabric, the new curriculum aims to instil a sense of national identity and pride. Critics, however, argue that such changes might diminish students' understanding of global historical contexts.

NCERT's decision aligns with a broader trend in educational policy, one that prioritises national history over global perspectives. For students preparing for competitive exams like the UPSC, this change could have significant implications, as it shapes the foundational understanding of history they carry into adulthood.

While some educators and historians welcome the focus on India's rich and complex past, others caution against the potential insularity it might foster. As India continues to navigate its place in an increasingly interconnected world, how its history is framed in classrooms remains a topic of passionate debate.
