NCERT Textbook Revisits Women Rulers and Peasant Uprisings

In a move that promises to reshape perspectives, the latest NCERT Grade 9 textbook has turned its gaze towards the often-overlooked narratives of women rulers and peasant revolts in Indian history. Figures such as Rani Abbakka Chowta and Queen Naiki Devi are given their due, celebrated for their leadership during times when the subcontinent was besieged by invasions.

Rani Abbakka, who valiantly defended her kingdom against Portuguese incursions, and Queen Naiki Devi, remembered for her resistance against Muhammad Ghori, exemplify the courage and strategic acumen of women rulers. Their stories, often relegated to footnotes, now stand at the forefront, challenging the traditional male-centric historiography.

The textbook also delves into the gritty reality of peasant uprisings. It draws attention to the 1669 and 1686 Jat rebellions against the Mughal empire, illustrating the persistent struggle of the common folk against oppressive regimes. Despite their lack of resources and formal training, these uprisings signify a crucial form of resistance.

Furthermore, the textbook does not shy away from detailing the brutality faced by Sikh Gurus under Mughal rule, offering a stark reminder of the religious and cultural oppression faced by many during this period. By incorporating these narratives, the textbook provides students with a comprehensive view of the socio-political fabric of India between 1000 and 1700 CE.

An Enriched Historical Perspective

This inclusion marks a significant shift in educational focus, encouraging students to appreciate the diverse threads that weave the tapestry of Indian history. It fosters a more inclusive understanding, emphasising the roles of various communities and individuals who resisted foreign domination.

By revisiting these narratives, the NCERT seeks to inspire a new generation to recognise the complexities of history, urging them to consider perspectives beyond the conventional accounts. In doing so, it not only educates but also empowers students to appreciate the resilience and diversity that characterise India's past.
